LinkedIn is supposed to be a more professional social networking site.
The site allows you to link up with friends but also with colleagues and those in your industry or field of employment. You can join groups and discussions on more professional topics to do with your interests and industries of choice. I have a profile in a more professional capacity however I don’t look at the site much, it’s been that way for ages now. I use it as a way to put the professional in me out there in name. I haven’t been active on it for a while and I really don’t intend to change that in the near future.
This site could be a time-waster for those who are active on it and there are different levels of access depending on whether you pay for an account
or you use the basic one for free. I suppose it could be a good way for recruiters/head hunters to find employees looking to jump
from one job into another. It is also a good way for colleagues to keep in touch. I don’t find the site as user-friendly as others in the social media stable but then it has been a while since I used it last.
The name ‘LinkedIn’ sounds like ‘get connected’ or even
‘turn on, tune in and drop out’. Again, I am not pinning my hopes on this particular branch of social media to bring
in business or make connections that I otherwise would not have. This is one site that I have often wondered whether it is worthwhile
having a profile on or better to remove the profile altogether.
For now, it simply adds to our digital footprint and if someone is interested to contact us then there are several avenues to do so. The difference between this site and others is that it’s not filled with pictures or comments on what people are eating for breakfast or their pets etcetera.
This one is more professional and therefore you can find articles of interest on many subjects depending on who your connections are and what groups you belong to.
I know this was a bit short and sweet but never fear I shall
try to say more in the next edition. My next post will be about good old Wikipedia… so stay tuned.
