What is meant by Social Media? It is simply a different form of media than the usual mass media, a more personalised way of creating, sharing and receiving material. It is pretty basic Social Networking for the computer and internet age. The internet is something of a ‘this generation’ tool and akin to the wild west where the great expanses are virtually unregulated. I didn’t grow up with it but have developed an interest over a number of years. It is a place where Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and Pinterest
operate as well as good old Wikipedia.
particular sites are spaces I will be talking about in the next few posts. These spaces/apps/platforms are only controlled to
some degree by the companies and individuals who created them. Individual governments may try to coerce and influence the
sites but the word soon spreads and individuals or groups will resist. They are places that I am fairly familiar with as a general
user and it is with this use in mind that I will talk more about them.
These sites are great time-wasters if you are interested in scrolling through seemingly endless posts about all manner of subjects. Some sites are more for visual i.e. pictures and others are more for saying something and/or sharing something. Blogging too is a form of Social Media. The world-wide web has created a phenomenon called the ‘digital footprint’. I must say, our footprint is rather large, spreading over a number of platforms to varying degrees and I do wonder what direction it
will all head.
You do not have to know much
about programming and protocols to get started with these sites, they generally make them user-friendly. The ability to put your
point across is easy and there will be people on the other end who will read what you post, generally ‘like’ what you post, some will comment and even share with their friends what you say.
Of course there will be those with opposing views and they might express their opinions mostly with sarcasm, insults and less likely with actual facts. As the old saying goes 'Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one at least'.
Over the next few posts I will be looking at each of these sites in turn. Stay tuned for my more in-depth look at Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and the like….
