My World

Another World War..Anyone?

This post is not quite ‘War and Peace’ nor is it necessarily doom-saying, it’s just that I’ve been watching the news lately and the events unfolding are not good.  They seem to speak of developing conflict on several fronts and we see America and it’s allies bringing in military hardware.  As if that ever solved anything but does anyone see similarities to previous eras??  Let’s do the time-warp again…..

While walking through a shopping centre filled with people… it was the lunch time rush with everybody pushing and shoving… I was talking to my partner about world events and I said “It’s a new World War, we just don’t know it yet.” At first she laughed it off but the constant headlines about extremist groups such as ‘the Islamic State’ and Russian rogues taking over parts of Ukraine made her think again.  In fact, she now reckons that I might be right and that other people have been saying it to her as well.  Well, I don’t really want to say “I called it…”

Now, I think I said this back in 2000 when the Twin Towers fell.  I mean, if we look back - World War II had been raging for a while then things changed when Japan bombed Pearl Harbour and the rest of that is history.  In 2000 Al Qaeda flew planes into the World Trade Centre and let’s not forget the Pentagon.  Those symbols of high finance, trade and the world economy were reduced to rubble by a couple of hijacked planes and a small group of extremists.  Was this the opening salvo to an all- encompassing World War?  Since then we have had Desert Storm re-run and the war in Afghanistan… err ‘the war on terror’ and the hunt for Osama Bin Laden.  Now we’re talking about putting weapons in the hands of one group to fight another.  Geez… didn’t we do this in Afghanistan originally and look how great that turned out?!!  I seem to remember we helped Saddam Hussein against Iran… only to then take him out.

Now we have ISIS aka the Islamic State threatening action against not only other groups in its sphere of influence such as the Kurds but against the West.  They have action in Syria and Iraq, you know something big is happening when even Iran is talking to the West about the threat of this mob.  I see that the Saudi Sultans are warning of this too.  At the same time there’s pro-Russian forces walking into Ukraine’s sovereign territory.  Are these events linked??  The Russians are no fans of Islamic extremists, just have to look at Georgia and Afghanistan.  So, I wouldn’t think that there was any chance of an Islamic State – Russia pact.  Could it be that these events are linked in the mass media as a form of propaganda?  Maybe Russia just wants some living room and is using this turbulence as a cover to regain what it thinks it lost in the breakup of the former Soviet Union… how ironic that this was exactly the spirit of Germany in the late 1930s and lead to World War II??

You have peacekeepers from the Philippines barely escaping from Islamic State forces while manning the borders of Israel and Palestine.  Well, there’s another conflict area fraught with constant danger and looking to explode at any time.  These particular peacekeepers, despite trouble in their own homeland with extremists such as the MILF go halfway round the world to man a wall between warring parties and come under attack by another group of Islamic fundamentalists.  This is where the UN is not quite as strong as it should be… they should have the ability to fight when threatened rather than running away during the night.    How about this, instead of sending military hardware to the Kurds or any other group we send it to the United Nations and let the peacekeepers do their job properly?  Perhaps, it is true that the United Nations is another ‘League of Nations’ - a failed international body?

We could just ignore all this and say that certain lands are fertile ground for nothing but conflict and extremists.  I can live with that, generally as it’s not part of my immediate reality.  I mean, here in Australia we are surely so far away from all that, we don’t have to be concerned? We are after all a small country in population and our forces already have a few things on their plate. Well, how about the 30 Aussies who died on MH17 when it was shot down over Ukraine?  Was that a war crime??  If so, what war are we talking about??  Could this be World War 3?!!! Aside from the UN where is NATO?  It’s not much good saying “That’s a terrible thing in Ukraine” but not really doing anything is it?  Sounds to me like a rerun of the late 1930’s in Europe… the history books tell us how well that went!!  Just ask Poland – a little bit of history repeating.

There’s plenty of naked aggression in various parts of the world, the UN is ineffective as there’s always someone who has veto, hello Russia… China… If this is World War 3 then it is not just country versus country but faction versus faction and minority against minority.  The action will not be in trenches but terror anywhere anytime which is worse.  I’ve often thought, as we put more and more defences up such as biometric testing at airports and the like that the terrorists have already won.  They have made everyone more alarmed but it hasn’t stopped the extremists.  Besides, none of these defences could stop the shooting down of MH17, which you would either say was a terrorist attack or a war crime.   Either way, someone should answer for this in the international court. Imagine that, you are sitting on a plane minding your own business, just trying to get from A to B and some rogue shoots the whole plane down.  Unfortunately it has happened before…

Not only were Australians aboard MH17 but they were in Bali at the time of the Bali bombings, there were some in London at the time of those bombings and in the Twin Towers too.  So, we are not immune despite having the ‘tyranny of distance’ on our side and not having a terrorist attack yet on this very soil.  The ‘lucky country’? - Damn straight and we want to keep it that way.  However, our government is still coming to grips with the fact that there are individuals who are fighting in these war zones who could return to Australia and may become a threat to our security.

You could say it’s just a crazy minority running around but they seem to be in so many places these days.  Let’s not forget, it only took the assassination of a crown prince to really ignite WWI and a madman to set the flame in WWII.  Since that time a number of parties have access to nuclear weapons and one of these is now playing games in his own backyard.  We need to say ‘Enough is Enough’ and have Zero Tolerance to this sort of violence.  The UN needs to strengthen its resolve and be given the power to take real action against those who are trying to undermine the vast majority who simply want to get on with their lives.

Have we learnt anything from history??  Doesn’t seem so!!  Perhaps humanity needs these big battles sometimes and we’re overdue for an all-in stoush?  This is a different world to the one in the early to mid-1900’s.  If we are seeing WWIII played out on our tv screens, on the internet etcetera then we better stock up with supplies because this is going to be one hell of a fight. Seems i am not the only who has ever wondered this... it has been on the minds of people for a long time now.
